Fable
- The Quiet Well and the Restless River (Inspired by Proverb 12:21)
Proverbs 12:21 — “No harm overtakes the righteous, but the wicked are filled with trouble.”
The
Quiet Well and the Restless River
In
a valley cradled between two hills, there lived a quiet well and a restless
river.
The
river roared day and night, boasting of its strength.
“I
carve mountains, I flood plains, I shape the world,” it thundered. “Nothing can
stand in my way.”
The
well, tucked beside a small village, said nothing. It simply gave cool, clean
water to anyone who came—farmer, child, traveler, even weary animals.
The
river laughed at the well.
“You
are small, hidden, and still. What good are you? Look at me—I am power itself!”
The
well replied gently,
“I
serve where I am placed.”
The
Season of Storms
One
year, the rains came harder than ever before. The river swelled with pride as
it rose higher and higher.
“Now
you will see my greatness!” it roared.
But
soon, its strength turned wild. It overflowed its banks, tearing through
fields, sweeping away homes, and muddying everything in its path.
The
villagers fled in fear.
Meanwhile,
the quiet well remained steady. Though rain poured all around, its waters
stayed clear. When the storm passed, the villagers returned—thirsty, shaken,
and in need.
And
the well was still there, just as before, offering life.
The
Aftermath
The
river, once proud, now flowed slower and murkier. Debris clogged its path, and
it groaned under the weight of what it had carried.
“I
only meant to show my power,” it murmured.
The
well, unchanged, answered softly,
“Power
without goodness brings trouble. But quiet faithfulness brings life.”
Moral
The
one who lives rightly stands firm through every storm,
but
the one who chooses pride and harm carries trouble within themselves.
Reflection
Proverbs
12:21 reminds us that righteousness is not about a life free from storms—but a
life anchored in integrity. In the fable, the well did not avoid the storm; it
simply remained what it was meant to be—steady, pure, and life-giving.
The
river, on the other hand, represents unchecked pride and self-reliance. It
mistook power for purpose. When pressure came, its strength became
destruction—not only for others, but for itself.
This
truth quietly unfolds in everyday life:
Integrity
may seem unnoticed, but it sustains.
Pride
may seem powerful, but it destabilizes.
Righteousness
does not remove trouble—it transforms how we endure it.
The
deeper lesson is this: what we are within determines what we release when life
overflows.
Application
Choose
consistency over recognition
Like
the well, focus on being faithful in small, unseen places rather than seeking
loud validation.
Guard
your inner life
What
fills your heart—peace or pride—will eventually overflow into your actions.
Respond,
don’t react
When
pressure comes, pause. Let your response reflect wisdom, not impulse.
Serve
quietly and faithfully
Your
steady presence may become someone else’s source of strength in difficult
seasons.
Examine
your “storms”
Ask
yourself: Do my trials reveal patience and trust—or frustration and harm?
Heavenly
Father,
Teach
me to be like the quiet well—steady, faithful, and life-giving.
In
moments when I feel overlooked, remind me that You see what is done in quiet
faithfulness.
Guard
my heart from pride and restless striving.
When
pressures rise and storms come, help me not to overflow with fear, anger, or
harm,
but
with peace, wisdom, and trust in You.
Shape
my character so that what flows from me brings life to others.
Let
my actions reflect Your righteousness, even in the smallest things.
Keep
me rooted, grounded, and aligned with Your truth—
so
that no trouble overtakes me, but instead draws me closer to You.
Amen.
