Story
Joseph in Egypt
Joseph
was a young man who had been sold into slavery by his jealous brothers. He was
taken to Egypt and sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the
guard.
Joseph
worked hard for Potiphar and soon became his trusted servant. Potiphar saw that
Joseph was a capable and honest worker, and put him in charge of his household.
Now,
Joseph was a handsome young man, and Potiphar's wife took notice of him. She
tried to seduce him, but Joseph refused her advances. He said, "How then
can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"
But
Potiphar's wife persisted, and one day when there was no one else around, she
grabbed Joseph by his cloak and demanded that he sleep with her. Joseph fled,
leaving his cloak in her hand.
Potiphar's
wife was furious and accused Joseph of trying to seduce her. Potiphar,
believing his wife's story, had Joseph thrown into prison.
But
even in prison, Joseph continued to work hard and gain favor with the prison
warden. He interpreted dreams for other prisoners, including the baker and the
cupbearer of Pharaoh.
One
day, Pharaoh himself had a troubling dream and none of his advisors could
interpret it. The cupbearer remembered Joseph and recommended him to Pharaoh.
Joseph
was brought before Pharaoh and he interpreted the dream, warning that a great
famine would come upon the land. Impressed with Joseph's wisdom, Pharaoh made
him second-in-command over all of Egypt.
Joseph
was able to use his new position to prepare Egypt for the famine, and when it
came, he was able to provide food not only for the people of Egypt, but also
for neighboring countries.
Through
it all, Joseph remained faithful to God and was able to use his trials and
tribulations for good.
Moral of the story
The
story of Joseph in Genesis 39 teaches several important moral lessons.
Firstly,
it emphasizes the importance of integrity and the dangers of temptation. Joseph
refused to give in to Potiphar's wife's advances, even when it would have been
easier to do so, because he recognized it as a great wickedness and a sin
against God. This highlights the importance of staying true to one's principles
and values, even in the face of temptation or pressure.
Secondly,
the story teaches us the value of hard work and perseverance. Despite being
sold into slavery and later thrown into prison, Joseph continued to work hard
and gain the favor of those around him. His diligence and dedication eventually
led him to a position of great authority and influence.
Finally,
the story of Joseph shows us that God has a plan for our lives, even when
things seem difficult or unfair. Joseph's trials and tribulations ultimately
led him to a position of great power and influence, and allowed him to help
others during a time of great need. This highlights the importance of trusting
in God's plan, even when we don't understand what it may be.
