Story - The Ripple of Kindness (Based on Proverb 11: 17)
The
Ripple of Kindness
In
the bustling streets of London, amidst the hum of double-decker buses and
hurried footsteps, lived Amir, a young man working at a small café in Hackney.
Life hadn’t been easy; he often felt that the world demanded toughness and
cunning to get ahead. Yet, he held onto one simple belief his grandmother had
instilled in him: “Kindness always circles back, even if you don’t see it
immediately.”
One
rainy Monday, Amir noticed an elderly woman struggling with her groceries
outside the café. Without hesitation, he dashed over, offering a hand. She
smiled warmly, a rare sparkle in her tired eyes, and thanked him. For Amir, it
was a small act—yet it felt unexpectedly rewarding.
Days
later, a large order came into the café, and the espresso machine broke down.
The café owner panicked; a big corporate client was waiting. Without thinking
twice, Amir ran through the rain to a nearby coffee shop, borrowed a machine,
and returned in record time. The order was saved. When asked how he managed, he
simply shrugged, thinking of the elderly woman and the smile she had given him.
Meanwhile,
Amir’s coworker Leon, who often mocked customers and treated staff poorly,
noticed how the owner praised Amir. Driven by envy, Leon began cutting corners,
hiding mistakes, and even blaming others for mishaps. At first, he felt clever,
like he was outsmarting everyone—but slowly, his misdeeds caught up to him.
Clients complained, mistakes piled up, and Leon’s reputation began to crumble.
Months
passed. The elderly woman Amir helped came back to the café one afternoon,
revealing that she was a retired event planner. She remembered Amir’s kindness
and offered him a contract to cater small, high-profile events—an opportunity
that changed his life. Amir realized the truth of his grandmother’s words: in
lifting others, he had also lifted himself.
On
the other hand, Leon, consumed by bitterness and his own missteps, found
himself alone, facing the consequences of the harm he had sown.
Amir
smiled as he poured a cup of coffee for a new client, feeling a deep sense of
fulfillment. Kindness, he knew, was not weakness—it was a quiet power that
shaped lives, including one’s own.
Reflection:
This
story illustrates Proverbs 11:17 beautifully. Acts of kindness not only bless
others but create opportunities, trust, and joy for ourselves. Cruelty, on the
other hand, breeds trouble and isolation.
Application:
Even
in small actions—holding a door, listening to someone, offering help—our
kindness creates a ripple effect that often comes back in ways we could never
anticipate.
Lord,
teach us to live with hearts of kindness. Help us sow goodness in every
interaction, trusting that You honor and multiply our love. Amen.
