Emotions & the Bible: Understanding Feelings with Faith – Part 10
Discover More Emotions:
Peace
— The Calm in the Storm
Emotion:
Peace
Bible
Example: Jesus Calms the Storm (Mark 4:35–41)
Key Verse:
“He
got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Peace! Be still!’ Then the
wind died down and it was completely calm.” – Mark 4:39 (NIV)
Reflection
The
disciples were terrified. The storm was fierce, the waves were crashing, and
their boat was filling with water. Meanwhile, Jesus was sleeping—calm in the
chaos. When they woke Him, panicked and afraid, Jesus didn’t panic. He spoke peace
into the storm.
Sometimes
the storm is outside us—circumstances, losses, challenges. But often, the storm
is within—anxious thoughts, racing emotions, inner unrest. And yet, the
Prince of Peace still speaks:
“Peace.
Be still.”
This
peace isn’t the absence of trouble—it’s the presence of Jesus in the
middle of it. It’s knowing that even if the waves roar, God is in the boat.
Emotional Insight
Emotionally
literate people know how to return to peace, even in stress. They learn
to pause, breathe, and listen for God’s voice above the noise. True peace isn’t
something we create—it’s something we receive.
Prayer
Lord
Jesus, speak peace over my anxious thoughts. Calm every storm within me. Help
me to rest, knowing You are near and fully in control. Let Your peace guard my
heart and mind.
Reflection Questions
- What “storm” am I facing right
now—inside or outside?
- Have I paused to invite Jesus into it?
- What would it look like to rest in His
presence today?
Action Step
Take
5 minutes of silence today. Inhale deeply. Say, “Jesus, I receive Your
peace.”
Write
down a short prayer or verse (like Philippians 4:6–7) and keep it nearby. Let
it anchor you when emotions rise.
