Walk with Eagles, Not Crows: A Fable Inspired by Proverbs 13:20
On
the edge of a vast mountain lived a young sparrow named Finn. Though he was
small, he dreamed of flying higher than anyone in the valley.
Every
morning, Finn noticed two groups of birds.
One
group was made up of majestic eagles. They rose with the sunrise, strengthened
one another, and soared above the clouds. They spoke of patience, discipline,
courage, and the beauty of seeing the world from above.
The
other group consisted of noisy crows. They laughed at the eagles and mocked
anyone who wanted to improve. They spent their days arguing, stealing shiny
objects, and encouraging one another to take the easiest path.
One
afternoon, a crow called to Finn.
"Why
work so hard? Stay with us! We have plenty of fun and never worry about
tomorrow."
Finn
was tempted. The crows' games were exciting, and their laughter echoed through
the valley.
For
many days, he followed them.
Instead
of practicing flight, he wasted time chasing worthless treasures. Instead of
learning wisdom, he learned complaints. His wings grew weaker, and his dreams
seemed farther away.
One
morning, an old eagle landed beside him.
"Little
sparrow," the eagle said gently, "you are becoming like the birds you
spend your time with."
Finn
looked around. The crows had never flown beyond the trees. They were satisfied
with scraps while the eagles explored mountains, rivers, and skies he had never
imagined.
Ashamed
but determined, Finn thanked the eagle and began spending his days with the
soaring birds.
At
first, the training was difficult. He rose early, practiced faithfully,
listened carefully, and accepted correction with humility.
Day
after day, his wings grew stronger.
Soon,
Finn found himself flying higher than he had ever dreamed possible. Looking
down, he realized something wonderful.
Changing
his companions had changed his direction.
From
that day forward, whenever young birds asked how to reach the mountaintops,
Finn would smile and say,
"Choose
friends who help you become who God created you to be."
Moral
of the Story
The
people you choose as friends shape your character, your decisions, and your
future. Wise companions encourage growth, while foolish companions often lead
to regret.

Proverbs
13:20
"He
who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer
harm."
Reflection
The
story of Finn the sparrow reminds us that our closest relationships have a
powerful influence on our lives. Just as the sparrow gradually adopted the
habits of the birds he spent time with, we also become more like the people we
choose to follow and befriend. Our conversations, attitudes, priorities, and
even our faith are shaped by those around us.
Proverbs
13:20 teaches a timeless truth: wisdom is contagious, but so is foolishness.
God desires us to build friendships that encourage spiritual growth, honesty,
kindness, and obedience to His Word. While we are called to love everyone, we
should wisely choose those who have the greatest influence on our hearts and
minds.
Today
is a good opportunity to ask yourself: Are my closest companions helping me
grow closer to God, or are they pulling me away from Him?
Application
Evaluate
your closest friendships and consider how they influence your faith and daily
choices.
Seek
friends who encourage biblical values, integrity, and spiritual maturity.
Spend
time with believers who challenge you to grow in wisdom and Christlike
character.
Be
willing to step away from relationships that continually lead you toward sinful
or harmful choices.
Become
a wise friend yourself by encouraging, supporting, and pointing others toward
Christ.
Pray
regularly for discernment in choosing friendships and mentors.
Heavenly
Father,
Thank
You for the wisdom You give through Your Word. Help me to choose friends who
encourage me to walk faithfully with You and to grow in wisdom each day. Give
me discernment to recognize relationships that strengthen my faith and the
courage to distance myself from influences that lead me away from Your truth.
Teach
me to be a godly friend who reflects Your love, offers wise counsel, and
encourages others to follow Jesus. May my words, actions, and relationships
bring honor to You. Guide my steps so that I may walk with the wise and become
more like Christ every day.
In
Jesus' name, Amen.
