Day after Day, O lord of my life, shall I stand before thee face to face? (Song 76) by Rabindranath Tagore
Day
after Day, O lord of my life, shall I stand before thee face to face? With
folded hands, O lord of all worlds, shall I stand before thee face to face?
Under
thy great sky in solitude and silence, with humble heart shall I stand before
thee face to face?
In
this laborious world of thine, tumultuous with toil and with struggle, among
hurrying crowds shall I stand before thee face to face?
And
when my work shall be done in this world, O King of kings, alone and speechless
shall I stand before thee face to face?
Day
after Day, O lord of my life, shall I stand before thee face to face? With
folded hands, O lord of all worlds, shall I stand before thee face to face?
This
poem speaks of true devotion. The poet, with deep respect for God, surrenders
himself to God’s will, recognizing that God has ultimate power. He asks to
stand humbly before God, with hands folded, feeling God’s presence in the vast
sky and in everyday life.
Instead
of leaving this beautiful world, the poet chooses to stay, work hard, and face
life’s struggles. He is ready to do his simple duties, no matter the challenges
around him, while keeping God in his thoughts. When his work is done and his
life ends, he will fully surrender himself to God’s spiritual power.
This
short, simple poem by Tagore reflects devotion and deep humility, showing his
sincere desire to offer himself completely to God.
